About Us
Who are we?
Sustaining Dunbar is for everyone living (or working) in the Dunbar and East Linton ward of East Lothian.
Sustaining Dunbar is whoever chooses to become involved. It provides a network to enable you to make contact
with others who share similar interests and to get involved in whatever way you wish or are able.
As individuals it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the unprecedented challenges facing humanity.
With the real and imminent prospect of runaway climate change combined with peak oil, a global food crisis and
a global economic system crumbling before our eyes, it is clear that profound changes in the way we live
our lives are inevitable in the very near future. We need realise that this actually gives us a huge opportunity
to come together as a community to envision, plan and create a way of life that is not only sustainable but is
potentially much more creative and satisfying.
What are our aims?
Our aims are
- To raise public awareness in the Dunbar area of the challenges posed by Climate Change and resource depletion, particularly Peak Oil
- To encourage activity and contributions from all sectors of the local community in envisioning and planning for a locally resilient and sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste future for Dunbar
- To focus on opportunities and solutions and on developing a sense of collective purpose and action
- To identify and support groups and individuals who are especially vulnerable to the threats posed by climate change and resource depletion
- To work with other transition initiatives and the UK Transition Network and similar organisations to research and develop strategies and solutions which empower individuals, groups and businesses to become sustainable and resilient
You can read our draft Development Plan here.
How it works
